Pumas Re-Launch Youth Program

The Pumas held their first youth team try outs on Sunday 22nd July at Astor of Heaver School in Maidstone. Fortunately the weather was kind and 16 young men aged between 13 and 17 years showed up for the work out.

“The Pumas have been without a youth squad since 2002 but the club has a history that dates back to 1987 so we felt it was time to resurrect it” commented Committee member Mark Lawrence.

Injured Pumas Safety Bjorn Haynes took charge of the practice and put the prospective players though a series of drills covering footwork, ball handling, stances and reactions. Then there was a chance for a short Flag Scrimmage which gave the boys their first taste of competition which they really enjoyed.

The team have been in talks with experienced Youth Head Coach James McCartney about his possible involvement in the set up and we are very pleased at his keenness to be part of the Pumas once again.

Coach McCartney told us “I have been going down memory lane with all my newspaper cuttings, it would be so good to get the team back on track”. Both Bjorn Haynes and Mark Lawrence are ex-students of James‘s.

Our goal is to form a Junior (14-16) and Youth (16-18) Kitted team ready to play next season and resource willing a flag team too. The Pumas are committed to this venture and will be raising funds to purchase kit.

Our next youth practice will be on 5th August at Astor of Heaver School at 10am (we meet by the car park of St Simon Stock School).

Anyone interested in playing should bring football boots and a gum guard. For further details contact;
